Ride Description
The Runaway Mine Train is an exciting family roller coaster
with sudden drops and turns. Using a chain lift hill, riders are taken up 60ft
and travel at speeds of 33mph. As soon as the train descends over the lift
hill, they encounter a double helix. The ride has no inversions and last for
about 2 minutes.
Ride History
The Runaway Mine Train is Six Flags Great Adventure’s first
major roller coaster opening in 1974 designed by Intamin. The original idea of
the ride was to have three trains operating and a fourth in reserve. The trains
had a bright color scheme; two in orange and yellow and two in orange and blue.
The forth train was eventually removed and the ride ran with only two trains
and a third in reserve. The Mine Train originally had a skid break system when
arriving back into the station; a more modern breaking system was later
installed. In 2005-06, the trains were installed with dual lap bars opposed to
a single lap bar. In 2012 the ride received a major change with a new computer
system.
