Ride Description
The Parachutes are a gentle family thrill ride that takes up
to three Guests 250ft up in the air and gently parachutes them down. Riders are
taken up by one of the eight chutes with a set of cables. Each chute has a set
of three guide cables as the chute travels up and down. Each chute has 4 steel
cables that are used to raise the chute to the top.
Ride History
This tower ride was designed after the 1939 NY World’s Fair Ride at
Coney Island by Intamin. Parachutes first opened in 1978 at Six Flags
Mid-America, known as “Sky Chuter”. Mid-America decided that 12 chutes would be
too much to operate for counterweight issues with sensors and other issues and
so they built the ride with only 8 chutes. At the time it was the highest
thrill ride in the world. In 1982, Sky Chuter was removed to make way for a new
ride and was relocated to Six Flags Great Adventure. “Parachuter’s Perch” first
opened in 1983 in a newly updated games area. Parachuter’s Perch stood as the
tallest ride in NJ until Kingda Ka opened in 2005.
